The Winnetka Board was formed in 1923 to help Settlement staff and families cope with social and economic consequences stemming from World War I. The first Fashion Show was held in 1926 at Skokie School. Later shows were held at Christ Church Parish House and New Trier High School, all followed by tea. The Fashion Show went on hiatus during World War II, but board members continued their fundraising efforts in smaller ways. Following the war, the Fashion Show resumed full-force. For seven years the show was sponsored by Carson, Pirie, Scott and Company, thanks to board member Mrs. Pirie Carson (Helen). Eventually the event became too expensive for one retailer to cover, so a variety of exhibitors were invited to participate, and models were recruited from the North Shore community, the format still in use today. Over the years the Winnetka Board took on additional roles at the Settlement, including purchasing a new kitchen at the Settlement House and building a cabin at House In The Wood camp. Since 1962 the board has sponsored an annual trip for Golden Agers and since 1973, a trip for School Age participants. The board also adopts several families at the holidays and members regularly participate in volunteer events like Thanksgiving Dinner and Holiday Food Baskets.
