Emergency Services

Energy Assistance

Looking for help in paying gas and light bills, qualified individuals and families can come to the CEDA ProgramSettlement, fill out an application, and hopefully walk away with some relief, knowing their gas and electricity will not be turned off.

Neighbors of all ages seek Energy Assistance, although a large percentage is senior citizens. To qualify, neighbors must meet with a staff member and show documentation of their need and income eligibility.

For more information on the Energy Assistance Program, please contact the Emergency Services department.

Food Pantry

The Settlement’s Food Pantry provides nutritional food to families and individuals in the West Towncommunity. The pantry is open five days a week to meet the needs of individuals who do not have access to the food they need.  Northwestern University Settlement also heads up a partnership between the Settlement and two neighboring settlements, Erie House and Onward House, called the West Town Food Network.  These organizations work together to insure that hungry neighbors in West Town get what they need without duplicating services.

For more information on the Food Pantry, please contact the Emergency Services department.

Holiday Assistance Program

Each year, beginning in October, the Settlement identifies families in need of special holiday assistance.  Parents provide a “wish” list for toys, clothing, household items and food that their families will need over the holidays.  These families are then adopted by individuals, groups andorganizations that purchase some or all of the items on the list.  Gifts are collected and distributed in late December, just in time for the holidays.  In addition, Settlement Auxiliary Board members spend one Saturday in December packing special food baskets that will be distributed to families as well. Packing crew is pictured below.  Christmas Caroling

In early December, La Posada ( pictured above)starts the festive season, with hundreds of neighbors in a procession around the community signing carols and extending best wishes.

Scholarship Program

Northwestern University Settlement’s Scholarship Program provides financial assistance for transportation, books, uniforms, school supplies, and tuition to grammar school, high school, and college students each year.

The scholarship program is primarily funded by our North Shore Auxiliary Board.  Students make application to the Settlement and then are interviewed by board members.  A dinner is held at the end of each school year to honor all of the students and their families who are a part of the program.

For more information or an application regarding the Scholarship Program, please contact the Emergency Services department.
