The North Shore Junior Board was founded in 1936 to raise funds to help maintain the then 10-year-old House In The Wood camp.  The earliest benefit was a Hand Work Bazaar, offering needle-point, knitted and fine-seamed items for sale.  Later benefits included a party on the S.S. Roosevelt on Lake Michigan, a “28 Shop” Fashion Show at Marshall Fields, a series of cocktail parties at private clubs, and a huge rummage sale.  In 1949 the North Shore Junior Board became the sponsor of the Chicago Antiques Fair held each year at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Chicago.  Two years later they had raised enough money to purchase a new site for House In The Wood in Lake Delavan, Wisconsin.  Between 1955 and 1979, the Junior Board also administered an annual Tag Day in partnership with the Chicago Children’s Benefit League.  In 1977 the North Shore Junior Board started the Guess Who’s Cooking the Dinner? benefit.  From food demonstrations in the early years, the benefit grew and matured until it was renamed the Glitter Ball in 2006.   In 1995 the Junior Board officially changed its name by dropping the Junior, becoming the North Shore Board of Northwestern University Settlement.  In addition to the annual Glitter Ball board members participate in several hands-on activities including St. Patrick’s Day BINGO with the Golden Agers, the Mother’s Day Gift Room for Head Start and School Age children, NSB Day at Camp, Thanksgiving Dinner for Settlement families, and Food Packing and Adopt A Family at holiday time.
